Fuck, why would anyone even consider that?

@avclub-22eda830d1051274a2581d6466c06e6c:disqus , stoned is one thing. There are plenty of freaky-ass movies I would watch stoned that I would never mix with LSD.

I tend to give The Fountain a lot of leeway because of its troubled production. A lot of the weaknesses I saw seem like they could have been ironed out had Aronofsky not lost funding halfway through.

Man, I thought the cocaine thing was a joke.

@avclub-5fdbaa11bd42c308322756f60f43785f:disqus How is Requiem relentlessly dour? It's gaudy, vicious, vibrant, wistful, tender, scary… I almost got whiplash from all the different emotional registers.

Aren't Pi, Swan, and a good chunk of Requiem already paranoid thrillers?

@avclub-c76b6ace370e59a66eb61f837dcc7b5e:disqus Jiggawat now? Just because they're both black and white and feature body horror? Come on. Wholly different imagery, themes, and atmosphere.

Max comes damn near to killing himself, but doesn't. And the characters in Requiem suffer spiritual and emotional death, but not physical.

@avclub-a54ddb402bd6590aa27965e4c34901e3:disqus All his characters decide their ultimate fate. Max chooses to trepan himself and pull back from the abyss, Nina chooses to perform her fatal piece de resistance, Tom chooses to finally accept the inevitability of death, All the leads of Requiem choose their aspirational

@TheDeadBurger:disqus But why boil it down? There's more to a movie than the moral.

For a cheesy B-movie creature feature, it was pretty good. Cool concept, some actual entomology mixed in with the nonsense, a spectacular reveal, and Mira Sorvino being badass.

Mark Margolis is a great "That guy" character actor.

Yeah, how was the part in the modern day more racist than the part in the sixties?

He think he all that. Which is perfect for movies where a character who think he all that is appropriate, but in other cases it comes off as grating and tone-deaf.

"Hearth" rhymes with "Amon Amarth," not "worth."

The first one was richly fulfilled potential, I say. Seriousness could have been built up in the sequel, but they decided to go the exact opposite direction.

The outtakes with Will coming up with various names for the alien (Scrot-throat, testi-neck, etc.) were funny, but that scene did not belong in the movie.

@Sunspear:disqus I agree that Ozy has a twisted view of the value of human life, and that there are certain Third Reich undertones to his actions and propaganda, but I think it's more ambiguous than you say. What WOULD have happened if he hadn't used the squid? Even if he hadn't alienated Manhattan as part of his

They're very… how shall I put it? They're very 70s. They present a lot of brilliant/hilarious ideas, though.
