E3 only helps those of us who are gamers, 90% of the market don't even know what E3 is.

I personally don't mind the idea of making Lara a more vulnerable character as an origin story. I found the idea of making Lara a more human, flawed character to be a totally valid one. I want female protagonists who persevere through hardships by their own initiative and physical ability.

When you have an established fan base, it's kind of a kick in the nuts to say "we aren't going to make games for you any more".
