I'm fairly certain you could twist it so that he's only right handed in SS since he's actually a trained knight, unlike the other games where he just picks up a sword randomly. When he picks up certain other items he's never used before, he goes left handed.

Those games are kinda more 16 bit affairs though, even 8 bit killer ironically enough. VVVVVV looked like a C64 game, plus the whole "vaguely in space" thing was very Atari.
