I am very conflicted on Maher as a feminist. He seems to hold a sincere belief that women deserve equal rights and treatment under the law, that they should be free from harassment and rape. Yet he also holds personal opinions about women and female behavior that are at best antiquated and chauvinist. At best.

Any man, any REAL man is compassionate and respectful. Your man-brain, gay or otherwise, is just fine. It's these douchewaffles who've got the major malfunction.

The truth of the matter is, men who respond to catcalling with "But how will we meet girls?" do not actually know how civilized, potty-trained men meet girls. Like, they honestly don't get it and can't be arsed to learn.

Oy. Her reply was a rueful joke. She meant rape threatENers (threaters is not a word) and then said, "Sure, why not? The cat-callers too."

I knew you meant the rape threateners, but yeah, the cat-callers too. For every cat-caller we send to prison, we can release a dozen non-violent drug offenders. The cat-callers can be released as soon as they write a thousand-word essay on why unwanted sexual attention is wrong. In prison, they'll have LOTS of

As I've said elsewhere: Men have to meet women somehow, and it is actually unfair to expect us to only approach women if introduced by a "notarized co-acquaintance."

Agreed. It's totally fine to say hi to strangers in some circumstances. Socialized, potty-trained humans understand a thing called nuance.

Oh boozie-hoo-hoo, the poow widdoo mens, having their dehumanizing and obnoxious behavior called out by the people it harms. Won't somebody please consider their FEELINGS? Take some of the charge out of this conversation? Which is to say, calm down, bitches!

Guys just shoot up schools when they can't get dates. They just do. Boys will be boys, amirite?

Could we please change that to 'alleged" talking horse? As an actual talking horse, Bojack here feels libelously slandered.

If I agreed with this any more my head would 'splode. Western liberals, including women and Queer folk, zealously defend a religion that would oppress them for being who they are and believing what they believe.

Oy. That quote is where he comes closet to actual racism and is hard to defend.

Actually, Bill Maher is an outspoken anti-imperialist and has been for years. He's almost always the first to condemn military adventurism or interventionism, and condemns hawkish Democrats as well as Republicans.

THIS Berkeley alum doesn't think Bill Maher should be making commencement speeches. But that's because he's a caustic, often cruel comedian who's said some very inflammatory things.

I hope you don't think *I* was using a strawman. Perish the thought! I actually agree with you entirely: regressive horseshit is horrible and completely unacceptable when white Christians do it. When brown folk do it, boy howdy do us Lefties fall all over ourselves to justify or ignore it. Bill Maher (and Sam Harris

I'd love to see stats on that. And I hope you do know what "spade" means. But I'm afraid you're almost certainly wrong. Even if you are right, it's not relevant. Men of all races catcall. It's a male problem way more than it's a minority problem. The solution is thus not to fix the way blacks or Hispanics think, but

I meant it was "wishful thinking" in the sense of anyone wishing catcallers would leave accompanied women alone. Certainly no woman wishes she were a man's territory.

Note that I'm not trying to harsh what you think is a way to be gallant and friendly. Chivalry is nice, but only with women who you know appreciate chivalry — as in, women you KNOW. I act all manner'a chivalrous for my wife. But she's my wife. If I didn't know she liked it, I'd only ever treat her like a complete

Oy. Men have to meet women somehow, and that means approaching women they don't know. Any man approaching a woman he does not know wants to talk to him runs the risk of coming off like a creep. That risk, the risk of rejection, is just part of the human experience, and any adult should be prepared for it.

"When you're with another man, you're considered their 'territory' by the type of man who usually catcalls, and bro, you wouldn't disrespect another dude's territory."
