Race doesn’t have a biological basis, so its application is always to create an “us and them” mentality. But you touch on something very interesting, how the definition of “whiteness” has always been shaped politically.
Race is an abstract concept. Even today in Europe, you have some people speaking of a Slavic or Nordic race, for example. The idea of a “white” race only really began to solidify in the United States, and is itself a very flexible label.
That would make sense, if there were such a thing as a “black genome” and the concept of race were anything more than an artificial construct.
We should apply the same level of scrutiny to whoever wants to play as Germans in Call of Duty, World of Tanks, or even Il-2 Sturmovich. Really? How dare they?
The Japanese had the mentality that all other Asians were inferior peoples, too.
I do, too!
I think it’s catching on more in Japan as well, given there are an increasing number of Japanese language-only games on Steam.
You mean a Palmetto bug? Technically not a cockroach, but a nightmarish monstrosity only fire can kill.
But the original folks are still out there (well, most of them). Offer them a 25% raise to come back? Might be cheaper than retraining.
Seems like, with careful planning, supply chains could be placed ‘in reserve’ and a process put in place to ensure rapid restart.
I find it hard to believe that voter fraud (at least in Washington) is as minimal as many believe:
“While voters must attest to citizenship upon registering online or registering to vote at the Department of Licensing Office, Washington state doesn’t require proof of citizenship. Therefore elections officials say the…
I agree. Facebook is a very programmer-centric company, and a policy like this seems very... I’m not sure binary is the right word I’m looking for. Very analytical, when probably a subjective touch is needed.
You need to ask Facebook. My guess is that they chose a policy that would ban generalized statements about any race & gender.
The cited article mentioned Facebook’s ‘algorithm’, but I’m not convinced that’s the only mechanism involved. I think reported comments are reviewed before they are removed. I’ve seen inconsistency on what is allowed and what isn’t (though not with some content, like that involving violence).
I interviewed at FB…
Then perhaps you should stop asking. No skin off my back either way.
The difference with your opinion is that it’s based on feeling, which is a pretty poor foundation to lay an argument on. Mine is based on stated company policy contained within the cited article.
But, should you still believe Facebook to be the racist…
No, but Facebook would allow it. :P I never mentioned what I’m okay with, but feel free to ask if you’re curious.
It comes down to the wording. The cited article mentioned comments about ‘radical Muslims’, which was deemed okay because it was a subset of a protected class (not all Muslims). I doubt the person writing the comment was referring to ISIS only, though.
I suppose it depends on where you’re commenting. If you’re on RT’s page, hatred against Jews flows.
The article explains the policy. It applies to generalized statements of all races. I complained about statements calling for the death of Israeli Zionists, but they weren’t taken down either.
