Less than 2% of all white Southerners at the outbreak of the war owned a slave. Nobody sane in the South sits around and reminisces about how great things would have been if they could only have owned a human. And no poor white boy in 1862 picked up a rifle to fight for the dearth of paid labor keeping him poor.
