"...Smith continued to leave her children with Porter"

huh? this child was 100% guaranteed to be continually abused in this home. are you saying that ALL foster parents are abusive and unsafe?

to me it says "this person will namedrop thier alma matter every three minutes"

right? like, can't she come up with a more upbeat comment for a story about rape and torture?

i want to like it but the human hands are creeping me out. it's the same way i feel when people put sunglasses on babies and/or give them adult human voices. ech.

Eh. Middle and high income youth have been "trying on" poverty for street/artistic/street cred for generations (at least since the 60's? beatnicks then hippies, punks, grunge, etc).

so edgy.

obligatory.

true. not a sports fan, but have heard the term used in that context as well as others ie "he was an absolute beast on the drums". i think that connotation is fairly new (last 15-20 yrs), though (?).

i think it might be a generational thing. "heifer" and especially "cow" are/were terms to describe someone (usually a woman) who is insensitive , dumb and clueless as to how dumb and ugly thier behavior is. used in that context, it has nothing to do with the person's appearance. i've definitely heard my mom and her

tbh, i got the same "be the hero" vibe as well (the "it's on us" cap right after probably didn't help— it felt like an army recruitment ad).

"if I tried I could probably get a look at his records and find out more. They're sealed.."

pffffft.

again, many people here are comparing their own stories about playing doctor with their equally curious friends/siblings/whatnot. it's not the same as a child/teen manipulating and tricking a much younger child to kiss and touch them. and knowing that they were being manipulative at the time. and then writing about it

She likened her behavior to that of a sexual predator, and manipulated her much younger sister into touching and kissing her. How doesn't this "hint at a consent problem"? While the debate on whether or not this was abuse will go on, a "consent problem" is the mildest way to describe it.

"Everything taken together paints a very different picture."

the difference is that yours were (presumably) consensual explorations of "inappropriate" (read: beyond your years) behavior with your friends. was anyone tricked or manipulated?

agree. it just dawned on me that the reason i return to this site is for the comments, which are always far more mature, intelligent and compassionate than the articles they reference (trolls aside, natch). i'm often struck by how inexperienced and smug the authors here seem (and with very few exceptions).

every white person who's not super racist deserves a cookie.
