Yah for sure.  Late 90s/early 00s is when India finally opened up their market and other makes started to come in without that more onerous joint venture rule.  The last 10-15 years has seen a LOT of growth and changes!

Yup. My two grandfathers had an Ambassador and a Padmini, so I spent time in each growing up. That shifted to driving in a Maruti 800 for a while.  An uncle had a Gypsy & Contessa, so time in both of those too.  I really miss seeing some of those older Indian cars.

These will forever be Premier Padminis for me. A shame they’ve been phased out and you don’t see them too often on the streets of India. Ambassadors still not terribly uncommon, but it’s rare to see Padminis anymore :(

I had similar experience with my 05 V6 6MT.  It was a damn good looking wagon in black with that little rear hatch spoiler.  I really miss it sometimes...but other times feel like I dodged a bullet (I bought it used and kept for about 3 years...luckily only a few minor repairs and got out of it before major issues).

I’d say the only real competition is Booker T & the MGs if you’re saying “rock” history. From 92 until 08 when the Ventures got in too, Booker T & MGs was the only instrumental act in the Rock Hall of Fame.
