Easy answer? Use a crack when using mods in SP, and swap files out before going into multiplayer.
IMHO, the bans are justified. I sure as hell won’t go near online mode with any mods in place. Eventually someone will make a launcher that allows you to quickly and easily disable/enable mods for online/offline play. Until then, either do it manually or avoid mods altogether.

Ni No Kuni is what sprang to mind for me too. I played it at Eurogamer Expo a few years back, and spent a lot of the time running up and down stairs, and pointing out how awesome the stairs were to my friend. He facepalmed, but in a nice way.
