They have been tested and approved as winter tires in Canada. They are marked with the same identifier as winter tires. Much more than a marketing gimmick.

It obviously won’t handle as well on track with all weather tires but that’s because it as a compromise. For the vast majority of the population they are perfectly good for winter conditions. They are rated the same as winter tires having been tasted by regulatory bodies to ensure they meet the same standards.

Tranport Canada have tested and approved All Weather tires for use in severe snow conditions. Tires approved as winter tires must have the snowflake symbol on them.

Tell that to Nokian, the federal transport body in Canada and similar one in the US. Nokian WGR3's are tested and rated as tires suitable for use in severe snow conditions. Have lived in Alberta and used these tires on my SUV, I know just how suitable they are.

They’ve just started introducing Merc B Class cars to the Car2Go fleet here. They’ve also pulled out of one suburb due to low usage which is not surprising. We use them regularly instead of having a second car, they are a great option.

It means that they are approved, by Transport Canada, winter tires in Canada and so perform within the expected range of winter tires. Mine are probably more expensive as they are SUV tires (plus CDN$ rather than $US).

Compound and tread are the main differences. I have used these in Alberta for ages and they are federally tested and approved as winter tires.

Agreed, but All Winter tires are approved as winter tires and perform with little discernible difference to pure winter tires.. They are approved as Winter Tires in Canada.

I had Nokian’s in Alberta, they were fantastic in the winter. I also had a Ford Exploder with some BF Goodrich ones I think. but they weren’t as good as the Nokian. The are a compromise but Transport Canada rate them the same winter tires and they gripped superbly.

Get a set of Nokian and you won’t need to change your tires at all. Unless you have some strange QC only laws that state the tires that differ from the rest of Canada.

And All Winter tires will perform almost as well as those. All Season tires should really be called 3 season tires.
