Uh, no, it’s not like a horizontal plummet. Commercial aircraft glide very well, and are designed to do so. A 747 has a better glide ratio than a small Cessna.

What’s the point of this? There’s not going to be conventional warfare between any combination of Russia/the West/China. If that happens, everyone is dead, forever. This is just a very expensive case of going through the motions.
