I tend not to go to score-based reviews anymore, they tend to skew my perception of the game the wrong way. Mostly I just read reviews here, ask for them in the comments, or hear them from Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw (he hates JRPG with a passion, but I like his ramblings) to get some insight.

My personal favorite that doesn't follow any continuity is 'Card Wars'. You would enjoy it if you happened to know a bit about card game culture, such as Magic: The Gathering.

I dunno, maybe its simplistic art style help in production costs/speed? Maybe they do a great job compressing enough story and humor into such short times that we really don't notice?
The way I see it, the appreciation for AT seems to be more genuine and diverse than MLP, not to belittle the latter's more devoted fanbase.
Adventure Time is a bit of a wild card since they experiment a lot after season 1, the first being a bit more random in humor.
