I dunno, maybe its simplistic art style help in production costs/speed? Maybe they do a great job compressing enough story and humor into such short times that we really don't notice?
The way I see it, the appreciation for AT seems to be more genuine and diverse than MLP, not to belittle the latter's more devoted fanbase.
Adventure Time is a bit of a wild card since they experiment a lot after season 1, the first being a bit more random in humor.
I am pretty otaku-ish, myself. So I would miss out on some of the other stuff I like if I go straight to core.
It seems to me those are merely pop culture references, by that same standard, it would mean the following, that;

Depends of the machine for me, some I had a lot more success than others. But one time I emptied out a whole claw machine from it's stuffed beanie-sized plush toys. Had to be at least 20 or more toys, left the machine empty, save for 1 or 2 in the corners.
