Being shot in the stomach is rarely fatal with prompt medical attention. It takes hours to die from a stomach wound, and there's little in the area that you can't live with damaged.
The ending of this felt like they just ran out of money midway through shooting the climax.
As far as gay action stars Luke Evans is the closest I can think of. At least Universal tried to make him one with Dracula Untold.
Also the posters had his name as Kung Fu George rather than Chinese George.
There is more to war and war cinema than people exploding. Come and See, one of the most harrowing war films ever made and a major influence on Saving Private Ryan, has zero onscreen deaths.

I read the original script and it was the same as the final story, except at the end the entire crew died to retroactively justify Pratt waking Lawrence up and it ended with a legion of their inbred descendants leaving the ship onto the destination planet. This script was never good.
He was getting few to no good major roles at the time. This was when he was also acting opposite Seagal in On Deadly Ground.

I've read a number of reviews for this that basically describe it as a very well-made DTV movie. Great action, flashy visuals but no characters or story worth caring about.
