I can tell you that Warlock: Master of the Arcane did that before Endless Legend, and that I wouldn’t be surprised if other games hadn’t done it even earlier.

Borrowing motifs and mechanics from other material is fine, so long as you do them justice and, possibly, better.
Given that Endless Legend (and every other 4X game) wouldn’t exist without Civ, I see nothing wrong with Civ taking ideas from it, ha!
It is clear that Final Fantasy has changed direction pretty significantly since I first encountered it in 1990, and that’s okay.
It’s also clear that I’m no longer the target market for the franchise, given its shift in focus/direction, and that’s okay too.
