It’s very bad etiquette not to and internationally a clear sign you are not respectable or are intentionally insulting your host. Watch the royals or former President for good examples.

I once ate pork after 17 years of vegetarianism because I didn’t want to be rude to my hosts. It was fine, nobody died. Obviously the pig died, but that was before.

In my line of work, it’s not uncommon for people to give me food. I almost always say thank you, and then politely chuck it after.

A friend of mine did a yoga trip/training in India. One night, their host who was Indian made them all pizza because he knew Westerners loved pizza. Every single person except her refused to eat the pizza because they were gluten free/vegan/carb free. She literally cried telling me the story. People are the worst.
