I think this trope was first introduced in the Scanners 1981 movie.

The original was a great logo. It stood out. The New Hope thing looks off.

I watched it when it came out in 1977 and there was definitely no ‘New Hope’ anywhere in the promos. Otherwise I would’ve remembered because I did try sketching out the Star Wars logo.
