I agree that this would, worst case scenario, be a mostly environmental disaster, but there is also now undeniable evidence that there is human damage. 24 people are currently being treated in a Fukushima hospital for radiation poisoning, 190 people are being tested for radiation exposure, and evacuees are being

I just saw on Japanese TV a Japanese Nuclear Agency official stating that damage from a meltdown would not exceed a 10km radius.

@Clashwerk: I've been thinking about that stuff, too. So much residual damage and contamination from that horrible disaster.

@VoltCruelerz: Unfortunately, the Japanese Nuclear Agency stated yesterday that the earthquake caused damage to the control rods. They are now working inefficiently, and the coolant system has broken down.

That's true. The possible atmospheric release would be less than a Chernobyl disaster.

@jorgeselva: There have already been reports of partial meltdown, which were handled yesterday, but it did lead to some release of radiation. Yet, a full meltdown would mean an environmental crisis where the surrounding environment might be contaminated, but, fortunately, the nuclear plant does have a large

@...And i'm a Snake.: Hey, at least there isn't a big image of the nuclear power plant with large text proclaiming "Meltdown!" or something like that.

@Dacker: Also according to CNN in that same article:

@demographic: You would think that is true, but actually, due to the nature of the deep water around Guam, it will actually possibly get less waves than those further areas. Hawaii is a volcanic island, and as such, it actually ramps up a tsunami wave instead of lowering it as an atoll would.

Japanese news is now reporting that a nuclear power plant and the area surrounding it have been put on a state of emergency. Reportedly, there may be a fire at the plant, and they have confirmed that they cannot cool down the reactor.

@Magnetism: Agreed. That live footage was just shocking. I was watching it, too.

This quake is a 8.9, the largest ever recorded in Japan. That is according to the International standard for earthquake strength.

The Red Cross has just confirmed that the tsunami wave is expected to be taller than the Pacific islands of Vanuatu and the Marshall Islands. They could potentially see a wave engulf both nations under water.

Tsunami map from Sendai Earthquake.

@MacAttack: This man speaks the truth.
