I see you, Coraline fan

I definitely see how it isn't mainstream, but that song is still upsetting. Whereas Flower used explicit language as a way to explore her confusing and contradictory desires, HWC basically just yells LOOK, SEXUALITY! It's as if someone who didn't really understand Liz Phair tried to write a Liz Phair song, but nope,

I actually just got into it 2 years ago. Her style is right up my alley though so it might just be that - I definitely think it outlives its era though

Me too, but counting the girlysound tapes, 90s Liz still produced an incredible amount of amazing songs

Did Liz play any guyville-era stuff? I'm hoping the answer is no so I don't have to feel bad about missing it

I definitely think that's the most powerful song on the Sufjan album, I can't really listen to it anymore unless I want to spend the whole day depressed.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and throw "Stable Boy" in that pool. The sound is really abrasive but the lyrics are very profound, the underlying melody is strong, and it's got their personality all over it.

That REALiTi demo really was perfect just the way it was, wasn't it? Also kudos for choosing the Bully song - they prefer to downplay the similarities, but it reminds me of Hole in all the right ways.

My list:

I have no idea why Joanna hasn't gotten more attention - that album is fantastic. Nobody really has anything negative to say about it either; it's just being kind of ignored.

I love a lot of Kurt Vile's stuff but I was really surprised by that as the single - it just feels really obvious I guess. Like really, more man in the mirror imagery? I guess I like him better when he's spacier and more stream-of-consciousness

Thanks for being the first person I've seen to mention girlpool! That album is phenomenal

It really is great. I think a nearly 30 song dive into Patrick Stickles' head is just too much for a lot of people to handle, so many haven't realized how great it really is. Stable Boy is one of the most beautiful songs they've ever written.

Joanna is being criminally ignored on these lists. She's my #1 with Sufjan at #2

2013 was the year i really dove into Yo La Tengo - there's still so much more stuff out there than I know, but I'm Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass and And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out are both albums I really enjoy. I could listen to Night Falls on Hoboken forever.

Ditto. I never got to see Rilo Kiley, but I've seen Jenny 4 times in various forms and she will always be a hallmark of indie rock for me.

I'd say so!

I approve of any excuse to talk about those movies

Joni Mitchell, Grouper, Freaks and Geeks, Linklater's "Before" trilogy, and the Dardenne brothers' movies basically defined my year

I thought that sketch was hilarious! Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer sold their obliviousness so well
