There are free alternatives to the software recommended here. Besides, Windows 8 won't bring most of the functionality shown above.

As much as I like these themes, there's always a problem: text inside the new tab becomes unreadable because of the lack of contrast. It has bugged me a lot in the past while I was choosing a new theme, but then I found this one: [goo.gl] Black text, white background - now we're talking!
