Tulsa is also where the “volunteer deputy” (a major donor to the police department) shot and killed a guy, so they’re probably a little edgy about how their department looks right now.

I mean, I might be wrong, but didn’t the cops who murdered a child (tamir rice) without remorse get off? White men of course.

Not the OP, but I felt something similar. It’s not that I think she shouldn’t be prosecuted, she definitely should, but I have the, possibly ugly, feeling that cases like this -- where a minority offender is wheeled out to face justice -- are just a Judas Goat. As if the PTB are loading up their least valued members

No, that’s not what I’m doing. I’m saying I don’t trust the motives or actions of the police department.

... I think the point is not that this officer shouldn’t face consequences, but that all the white male officers who aren’t facing consequences should.

This is where I am. I can note the possible double standard but set it aside for the far, far greater injustice.

Completely agree with you. She should be prosecuted, and to be honest for something other than first degree manslaughter.

But I also find it VERY telling that a white woman and an Asian man are pretty much the biggest examples of cops being thrown to the wolves by other cops.

And again, just to reiterate, I absolutely

It’s an ancillary issue, they can exist simultaneously. The fact that sexism like exists in police departments takes nothing away from the fact that racial bias is endemic in police departments across the country and that the police are often overly agressive and combative when dealing with black people. Nobody is

I hope that’s the case. Unfortunately I’m afraid it will be “see we take action!” by disciplining female and minority officers while the good ol’ boys network continues the status quo of protecting their own.

She absolutely is. And while I’m glad she’s facing justice it is interesting just how quickly the right decision was made when it seems that so many male officers get off with no charges and it takes forever to bring those charges against them.

Yep I agree. I’m not saying she is innocent. I’m saying it seems funny of ALL these cases it’s only a woman that gets questioned.

She deserves to be punished, but she will be the only one. The men will get off and probably get raises.

Yes, I understand the facts. I’m saying I don’t think the situation would be the same if she weren’t female. I think her department would cover her murderous ass if she were a man. People seem to take this to mean that I don’t think she should she prosecuted. What I actually mean is that I don’t view this police

Blue is for boys, duh!

Easy to argue that all the other cops who shot and killed black people in the last year did the same. They aren’t in prison, though. Many still have their jobs.

I somehow get the sense that a lot of police departments consider that no great loss and won’t make excuses for those cops.

I thought the same thing. And someone else pointed this out, but remember that cop in NYC that actually got in trouble for shooting someone in a stairwell? He was Asian. So, so far the only cops that have actually seen repercussions are an Asian man and a white woman.

I don’t want to defend this officer in any way, but it sure is surprising the swiftness with which this action has been taken, how quick the condemnation and disavowels came from her own force. Wonder if her being a woman has anything to do with it. The thin blue (male) line.

So the prosecutor doesn’t get death threats from the police union

Eh, I’m of two minds with this. I agree it shouldn’t be trivialized or sensationalized, but if approached correctly it could be good. I grew up with physical and sexual abuse and I think if I hadn’t believed I was the only one going through something similar (or that it was a bad reflection on me and my family - like
