We can presume two things at this point. 1) Valve is releasing their own steambox hardware to the market at some point 2) They are licensing steambox specifications to various hardware vendors including Xi3. Maybe so but the piston is still backed by Valve. Valve doesn't have control over third party/partner's prices of steamboxes of course. If Xi3 wants to price them self out of this industry they are free to do so but I could see some collateral damage to the steambox brand by doing so.

If the idea is for Valve to license 'steambox' specifications to different hardware manufacturers, how is it 'unofficial'? There's a great opportunity to lure console gamers away from consoles but it can't be done at this price.
