The point is that most of the world, including most of China has nothing to really fear. It’s a genuine concern for world governments to mobilize and contain, but the global hysteria is what leads people to fall back on dumb bigotries out of unreasonable fear.

Usually people wearing masks aren’t sick themselves, but wearing them to AVOID getting sick.
My experience has been that of rolling racism. I cough. People look horrified. Someone asks if I’m Chinese. I tell them I’m not Chinese, I’m Korean. Then I get asked which Korea I’m from.
My son works 50+ hours a week in a salaried position. His employer does not offer health insurance coverage because it’s cheaper for them to just pay the penalties.
My mother is from Hong Kong and my grandmother still lives there. During the SARS outbreak, my grandmother had to cancel a visit to us in the US since her flight was scheduled during the height of the panic. I still have family in both HK and the mainland so this is all very real to me.
Global pandemics are abjectly terrifying, but especially so with coronavirus, a fast-spreading flu-like virus that originated in Wuhan, China.
