@Gary_7vn: How many car batteries are recycled every day? About 100% of them. I don't think cars using current battery tech are anywhere near viable as much as the next logical thinking engineer but recycling will be a small challenge compared to the other problems.

What you need to remember is everything they design is divided across how may people will buy it. So lets say you have a $100 radio but you need to shake and break 20 $10k prototypes to make sure it is quality. That's $200,000+months of engineering time and test equipment divided by 20k cars compared to say Toyota…
