Lois McMaster Bujold. Her Vorkosigan saga for sci-fi, starting with Warrior’s Apprentice (it has the weakest writing, but once it gets going it doesn’t stop til the end). Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls for fantasy. Paladin of Souls has an amazing female protagonist, definitely worth a read.
