I'm sure I'm going to sound like an old man when I say this, but they were just *noise.*  And not even good noise metal; it was just hit a power chord and then jam the guitar against the amp to generate feedback.  Two thirds of the crowd was just covering their ears.

Cage the Elephant and Gaslight were both great at that show, but that first opener (I think they were called "A Place to Bury Strangers") was frigging AWFUL.  Honestly, they kinda ruined the whole experience.

I do hope that "WAS" is the operative word in terms of your friendship with this guy.

Honestly, "Handwritten" itself does that for me.  Specifically, the second chorus, and "And it travels from heart, to limb, to pen."  I don't know why, but that line just stays with me.
