Yeah, it definitely was like an 80s fantasy movie with actual art design, production values, and polish behind it. And I don’t know why every epic fantasy film these days has to force a Churchillian speech on their protagonists even when it makes no sense for the character (see also Theseus in Immortals), because

Star Trek: The Motion Picture originally got a G despite the agonizing transporter pad deaths. I guess they weren’t very graphic, but those screams were bloodcurdlingly horrifying.

Years from now, you can tell people your honeymoon started on Jakku. :)

I wrote Logan’s Run during the Watts riots, when youth(!) were rioting. The book was an implicit criticism of a lifestyle that destroys you and society, a lifestyle where maturity is rejected. You can’t live a hedonistic lifestyle and survive—you either die young or it catches up with you.

That kind of aesthetic moved over to AAA video games like Call of Duty and GTA.

That and the desperation that comes from declaring bankruptcy.

Now playing

Let me just post that Freddie Wong video about that from a couple months ago...

There’s a lady dwarf in this one? About bloody time!

I thought she was fine until her character gave a “rousing” speech at the end. It didn’t work for Henry Cavil in Immortals and it didn’t work there.

Yup!

Full agreement here.

Scott doesn’t have a single writing credit on any of his movies. Which explains why his movies are only as good as their scripts.

FWIW:

Controlled by a central computer intelligence, inexpensive to manufacture and easy to produce (limbs were held on with electromagnets), the battle droids were intended to overwhelm their foes in swarms rather than ruthless cunning.

3. Watching The Force Awakens and The Hateful Eight again.

I’m on board with that. Eva Green’s so good, she almost saved RoaE for me.

Hey, it worked for 300: Rise of An Empire!

I know I’m definitely in the minority, but I actually enjoyed Snow White and the Huntsman in a kind of throwback to 80s fantasy movies kind of way. But even I don’t think the sequel deserves a cast this good.

But that’s just Sturgeon’s Law. You could probably name 20 shitty movies period to any good one I could name, and so could anybody else.
