I had a somewhat similar experience with my ex. I didn't know much about trauma beforehand. can't say I do now, but being more aware of my relative ignorance is something at least.
that's reasonable, and I suspect the situation you were in is fairly commonplace. I've definitely let depression inadvertently sewer relationships before, or just… forgotten how to express myself (or why I should do so) when really down and out.
I just block and ignore the uncivil ones. there're always gonna be assholes and douchebags. ultimately, the inside of their head must be a hell of their own making, so I just leave them to their own devices.
mental illness doesn't fall into neat categories like that.

I seem to recall reading something about musicians in general having a higher tendency towards depression compared to the general population.
depression has a way of infecting adjacent, indirectly related things.
granted, that can't help, but I really think it's a bit more involved than just that.
