I live in Amsterdam and travel around Europe a lot. Just about everybody knows that the majority of Americans didn’t vote for Trump. They’re aware of and heartened by all the protests. Don’t even worry about blending in, nobody’s going to mess with you - besides Paris and London are already FULL of American tourists

You have a point, but she moved there as a kid, and probably feels like it’s her home. Most EU countries let you apply for citizenship after 5-7 years of residency, Switzerland is 15 and then your neighbors get to vote on it. It’s a bit much.

1. Naturalization (and what she’s actually being denied here is just that - it’s Swiss citizenship, not just a passport) is voted on by the township in which you live, whether it’s a small village or a large city. Yes, it’s really fucking weird, and it tends to go less well for immigrants living in villages.
