According to the Insider Podcast, they noticed they could do all O titles with Jell-O and then rolled with it. Until they couldn't get the license for Jell-O since it's a registered name. Hence, "Alpine Shepherd Boy."

It might just depend on the name. I knew a kid in college (northern New Jersey) that was always called by his full name. Three syllables and it rolled off the tongue so we always said it.
