I’ve always had the feeling that someone who refers to themselves as a(n) “_____ ally” has an ulterior motive or something. The need to explicitly state it seems weird.  

It’s not all that surprising if you step back and think about it. Similarly a child is far more likely to be kidnapped or abused by someone they know. It’s just that you are in proximity to these people all the time.
