It’s the opposite really — overuse for simple things that don’t need them (viral UTI or respiratory infections or STDs) are what is doing us in. That’s why so many basic antibiotics are essentially useless against things they used to easily manage.

This might be a function of the fact that the US transplant was from a cadaver whereas the European ones were from living donors — presumably the living donors could be tested and treated for infections because the transplant was done at their leisure rather than emergent as is the case with deceased donors.
Because over prescription of antibiotics is a huge problem in this country and worldwide and is basically going to kill us all.
Yeah, there are definitely more than one of these communal living hippy buildings popping up. This one seems, to me, just like living in a multi bedroom apartment with roommates and free housekeeping and beer — a far cry from not SRO/dorm style.
Do you have anything pointing to the $1400 ones being single rooms on a hall that share a common bathroom and kitchen with the rest of the floor? I’m willing to be proven wrong, I just haven’t seen that mentioned anywhere (though I would say given the history of SROs with extremely disenfranchised people it’s still a…
If you click the Wired link, there are multiple bedroom units with in unit bathrooms and kitchens and living spaces. The studio also has its own bathroom. The shared communal living spaces are for the floor — like the party and screening rooms you find in many fancy buildings now.
Comparing this to an SRO is like comparing...getting your appendix removed in the back of a bar on a card table to getting it done in a hospital.
Lyme doesn’t affect women more than men, chronic lyme does. The study linked (which opened fine for me — it’s from the Journal of Women’s Health) is a little questionable, but they concluded that patients with chronic were more likely to be female. They also point out that other, similar diseases with a similar F…
When someone’s unconscious I assume that you should is implied.
There’s not really anything you can do other than protect the head (put a pillow under it, move things away that they might knock into) and clear the area as much as possible both for their privacy and to make sure they don’t injure themselves. Unless the area is unsafe, you just let it happen wherever they fell and…
So am I and this is one of my worst nightmares on several levels, including the idea of having an embarrassing, stressful, personal moment turn into a viral video. When I was first diagnosed and before I was fully controlled, that was a constant fear.
Yup. Also if the mom was full blown seizing, the woman would have been thrown off balance and put the kid at risk again. Hopefully she didn’t hit her head too badly on the way down.
Truly remarkable.
That’s actually a misconception — people with epilepsy, neurologic conditions, or tumors can have seizures as part of their every day life. It really is that easy. Sometimes it’s triggered by something like flashing lights, sometimes you get what’s called an aura first (which in this case looks like it was the zoning…
I was actually highlighting that because I thought it was hilarious.
I just called to say I love you.
Don’t be! It’s literally a tongue that looks like a strawberry.
Scarlet fever is certainly worrying, as is the rise of antibiotic resistant drugs due to over prescription and improper use. In this case, however, it is a completely appropriate situation for antibiotics. It’s not the kind of scenario where withholding them due to concerns of rising resistance is a viable option.
I know, right? Like syphilis, it seems such like an archaic disease. Ditto measles and rubella — which I think are major reasons that people are foregoing vaccines today (“those are from olden times, no one in 2015 could possibly come down with that!”)
