My cat, Holly, does that weird territorial hoppy thing on our bed at times too. It took awhile to break her of it (she'd do it nightly when I was ready to got o sleep). Now she only does it when the sheets are changed.

IIRC, he was diagnosed with manic depression/bi-polar disorder years ago. It's not uncommon for people with that issue (and other mental illnesses) to seek out "relief" through self-medication, which is likely what led him down the road of drug and alcohol addiction.

This is just so, so sad. He was such an amazing man, but depression can be a terribly difficult beast.
