Actually there is a fast growing consensus now that it didn't, and that the universe is actually cyclic or part of a membrane. This is fairly recent, and hasn't made it into most text books, except for a few documentaries (there is a pretty good episode from BBC Horizon about it).

That is just nonsense... he could have given it away to a college student to go to class, a family member to go to work, an orphanage, a church, any kind of non-profit institution instead of demolishing it. So sad.
