I’d say all visual adaptations of the manga are worth watching. They have consistently excellent production values.
I preferred the second season to the first. The vaccine conspiracy parts of the Laughing Man case were fun, but the “the Laughing Man is memes” part was nonsense. The second series’ story arc is both more action-oriented and harks back to Oshii’s philosophical treatment of the franchise. But that’s just me!
Oshii’s movies are arthouse reimaginings of GitS and indulge his philosophy hobbyhorse pretty hard, especially the second, sure. But that’s the ingredients that put GitS on the map. There probably wouldn’t be a multi-media franchise if not for him and his team. Not to mention both movies remain a unique viewing…
