@Zaos: For the people that need this kind of lens, it will be useless. The downsides definitely outweigh the benefits, especially with the current other lenses available already for these people (progressive lenses).

yeah, but shouldn't your head be inside the sphere for it to work?

I use FRAPS for screenshots and didn't even think about putting the default capture folder into my dropbox public folder till now... great idea!

@AOClaus: that's not entirely accurate. Pure water still splits from H2O to OH- and H+ (H3O+), at room temp the concentration is 0.0000001 M, higher temps cause higher disassociation and more conductivity.

@Harrier: mineral oil is about 6.7 lbs/gal, lighter than water, but still pretty heavy. There are a lot of steel cases heavier than 35 lbs, the only problem with transport would be the liquid inside sloshing around.

@blaaps: I really wish I could promote this.

@MetallicaRulez0: if he put everything into condoms... would that be protection enough for you?

This makes me so happy, and really envious of the guts (and ingenious'ness) this guy has to create this.

@DrSpaceboots: mineral oil doesn't conduct electricity.

[physics major+optometry student+optician] makes me really anxious about tearing this whole thing apart.

@Shiverr!: Technically the billboard is "in focus" but the resolution isn't going to be high enough to make anything out on it. It's going to be like shooting a picture on an old camera phone as opposed to a nice DSLR.

@gigabrain: wouldn't be too hard, you probably just haven't talked to an optician that knows what he's doing, a -6.75 is easily within the realm of making sunglasses if you pick out the right frame for it. Now that you mention it, a lot of the z87.1 stamped safety frames I've made for patients would probably work

@gigabrain: if this was done on the front side of the lens (to however high degree it can go) then the back side of the lens wouldn't need as high of a prescription ground in it... could be a solution!

@gelatinous_d: all these other replies are forgetting about what LASIK and PRK surgery does, scratches (cuts or burns) the deeper layers of the cornea. But no, even in theory it wouldn't work for this kind of application.

@kerry: binocular vision (2 eyes) is the brains primary method, it takes a conscious effort (or lack of the 2 eyes working together or only having one eye) to switch that natural mechanism over.

@CommodoreRake: pinhole glasses are generally used more for visual therapy for young kids or for some very specific problems with the (extremely) older population but regarding people with presbyopia the lack of light making it through the grid is more costly to proper vision than their poor eyesight.

HEY

@bombastinator: yeah, they've always been really active with all that stuff... I'm the black sheep of the family that clicks on the nsfw links on gizmodo (and sometimes has to untag weekend party pics that are... nsfw)

@trs: no, there's still a perception difference when a camera is pulled back farther, like in the movies when something dramatic happens and the video camera shows the subject but the background zooms in/out, the subject is still the same size in the frame but the background changes significantly. 5D can overcome this
