I actually don’t think these C-classes are that bad. They don’t have that many features and the powertrain is pretty simple. My friend has had a 2002 C240 for about 5 years with well over 100k miles and it hasn’t had any major problems.

I know I’m late, but the key to keeping costs down is preventative maintenance. For one, start with an example that has not been abused to hell. Parts can be expensive (some parts can cost in the hundreds and thousands, even body trim), so the less you have to replace, the better.
