EDIT: Dammit, it switched articles on me somehow. Kinja’d.
Thank god people realized that Dave the Diver wasn’t really indie (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself) and voted for an actual indie game.
In all fairness, Alan Wake and its sequel were designed as narrative vehicles first and foremost, and horror games in particular have to be a lot more careful about atmosphere and presentation. So one that got accolades, I think shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand like that even if I didn’t vote for it.
Yeah, but by that logic ANY standalone game that releases DLC is “ongoing” until it stops updating. Ongoing games should only be MMOs, GaaS, and MAYBE multiplatform mobile games.
It’s not “because I’m comfortable with it.” It’s because it’s still more than powerful enough to do what I do with my PC.
Yeah, but my point remains: no other game has been named as HAVING that problem in the first place. Much older, longer lasting-games with less robust game engines had no problem having all their content stay in the game. It seems to me like someone at Bungie made the deliberate call to ignore this particular problem…
Considering D2 and Bungie were tailspinning and only getting more draconian about microtransactions long before selling to Sony, I don’t think there’s much spin to be had. For the record, I’m not a Sony fan and I’m not interested in a PS5 or beyond. XBox either, for that matter.
Can you give any notable examples of other long-running games that have had to vault their content? Because I’d never heard of anything like that before Destiny 2. I’ve played MMOs since the original Ragnarok Online, they never had to vault content. As mentioned above, Everquest still has everything.
Getting a number of replies with the “gotcha” of either Win11 requiring TPM while Win7/8/10 didn’t or less than five year old hardware not having it. Guys, technology and security advance. You will never be able to stop it. There are games now that require SSDs to run at any acceptable level, and that’s okay because…
“I don’t think many people out there were expecting anything more than a Skyrim in Space to begin with."
You choosing to stick with hardware approaching a decade old just because you're comfortable with it is not Microsoft's fault nor problem. That's your decision, but making that decision means you have no right to bitch about it. You chose to be in that situation.
...and? This isn't exactly setting new precedent. I recall them doing this with 7 as well.
I also am sick and tired of remakes and remasters. As I said in another article, however, I believe that remasters are fine as long as itcs for a new generation, i.e. 15 to 20 years later. This falls in that range, so complaining about this particular one seems shallow to me. Would I like a new entry? Sure. But this…
Preferably one that lets us make generic units that aren't just blonde? Please?
Calling this “cultural appropriation” seems like a massive stretch to me, and I’m liberal as all hell. You might as well say any white person cosplaying a character from Naruto, Demon Slayer, and Jujutsu Kaisen is guilty of cultural appropriation. Doesn’t that sound utterly stupid?
I feel like building hype by calling the game a “paradigm shift” prior to coming out counts as a pretty fucking big broken promise, especially after such a long development cycle, but YMMV.
That’s a lot of words to say, "I get off on attempted verbal smackdowns that mean even less than what I'm arguing against." XD
Sure. If you don’t have to spend currency to receive it, then it’s free. If it’s only “free” if you’re already spending currency, it is not free. So yes, things can be truly free in the context of money.
As long as you understand, sonny boy. /headpat
