They may have changed how they score in the last year, when I was building mine back up they said to pay off any loans and card bills and sure enough it went way up.

you are thinking of credit cards, if you close those accounts they will take your score down. Your score will go up for paying off loans, and credit cards, just don’t close the card accounts.
