Last year. I believe in California and the kid was allegedly trying to commit suicide by cop. There are videos. White folks, especially poor ones or ones with mental health issues, are also considered disposable (just not the same disproportionality). :(
And always important to remember that definitions of “bad guys” are fraught with racism, classism, homophobia, and the like. So I honestly don’t believe shit the cops say about “bad guys.” (Just like “good guys” with guns.)
abolish the police. i‘m sick of this. rest in power child.
But “equalist” (lmao cannot believe i just typed that) ALSO doesn’t address this tension and deliberately regresses the conversation.
What a great interview. She’s so vibrant and creative. LOVE the secret triplicate details :D
I agree with you, but I also think many semi-woke non-black ppl say things like this as a way to “invite in” other folks. I’ve seen my mom do it. Hell, I’ve probably done it.
I regret that you’re having to say this...it’s just so painfully obvious that people lack an intersectional understanding of this situation. A white man is talking down to a non-white woman. There’s multiple things at work...
Watch Insecure! It’s wonderful. V. different than Chewing Gum but I actually started them both at the same time and they tick different boxes (of happiness). The characters do things that make you want to scream but it’s like you know people that have done the same damn thing.
Maybe if I wasn’t wearing my POWER SUIT. ;)
Joelle IS the best and most realistic. Especially her pining for Reggie when she should look for something better.
I hope the 2nd season can sort of bring more definitive messages on the issues raised by the 1st season. Like, what exactly DID we learn about interracial relationships other than ppl got jokes for dayz? Or activism or respectability etc?
I agree. I think the shallower stuff is simply the content of most TV. It just won’t be deep all. the. time. I think there were some pretty predictable moments in the show that bored me, mostly relating to Troy’s “affair” and Sam’s various choices.
That scene on the couch where Reggie is talking to Al, Joelle, and Sam about his app, I was like, these characters ACT real but they are TOO PRETTY.
It appears he would like to express some opinions with us. He has a few.
Honestly this article sent my rage meter off-the-charts. I need to lie down and count to ten.
True, but in this instance, Ms. Begay’s appearance as an “activist Native” woman played a huge part in his vitriol.
This is outrageous. And yet, so typical. He would NEVER say that to a white man. I don’t think he would say it to me, a respectable-looking white woman. And she asked a legitimate question. GOD WHAT A TOOL.
if only that money could go directly to reparations *thinking emoji*
I love Reg and Sam and everyone. And Barry Jenkins. Just awesome. This episode was super upsetting and real.
