California's version is especially heinous because misdemeanor convictions count towards your strikes as well– several other states restrict it to violent felonies. That's how you get people receiving life sentences for stealing bikes and getting caught with a couple grams of weed. And they wonder why their prisons

Also Ken Bone chose to go on national TV. This dude was just chilling on vacation when suddenly he's whisked to the Oscars. He didn't ask for any of this.

So the fuck what? He got an absurdly punitive sentence thanks to dumb mandatory minimum laws and I'm supposed to not think he was the best part of the Oscars anymore?

Mexican investors have half-jokingly suggested that the Mexican government buy Twitter and shut it down– the cost of doing so would be far less than the hit the peso's taking every time Trump tweets about getting tougher on trade and immigration.

Super underrated movie, and it's such a waste David O. Russell makes stilted Oscar bait nowadays. Three Kings is more fun and more memorable than anything he's done with Bale and Law, and I'd love to see him make something with that tone again.

Same here, I think I've only seen the Final Cut once. Ridley Scott apparently showed a four-hour long cut to the studio early in the post-production process– I know it would be a bloated mess but I've always wished I could see that.

The song at the end of Three Kings was so good that I was furious at myself when I looked it up and saw it was a U2 song.

Yeah, that one shot of Vader emerging from the dark was easily the highlight of Rogue One. I would camp out for opening night tickets to a movie that's just 90 minutes of Vader annihilating overmatched Rebels.

That depends on how you feel about the "happy ending" and the voiceovers. Personally, I like the 1992 Director's Cut best.

Just saw this and wow, still stunned by that 10 second tracking shot of Darth Vader's uncut schlong. That aside, it was pretty meh for me. I liked the idea, but it seemed safe and point-to-point despite how strong the concept was. The leads just never clicked for me, which was a killer; we already knew the plot so the

I mean, shit, if he was that good you might as well keep him. Men who can become decent trauma surgeons after 15 minutes of speedreading don't exactly grow on trees, and all things considered I'd rather have someone capable of doing that on my side.

Satanic Verses is spectacular, read it this summer and couldn't put it down. I want to get to Midnight's Children soon.

Yeah, Noname's "Telefone" is one of my favorite projects of the year, but it was frustrating watching every review treat her like Chance's protégé. Referencing their work with Chance is one thing, but I feel like a lot of writers are grouping Saba/Noname with him in lieu of engaging with their stuff on its own merits.

I think that final twist is the most effective since White Bear. Those interactions with children are a hell of a lot darker if he really was looking at child porn, but the possibility he was framed is just large enough that you can choose to believe that if you want. The episode works both ways, mostly because

Yeah, It was clear very early on that Michael was insanely talented as a singer and dancer, and the Jackson 5 were too good to be called "corny." Just like you, my mom grew up with him and it was a pretty natural transition for him to go solo and become a star in his own right.

I'd never even heard of that, and reading some reviews, it sounds like there's a reason for that.

The Black Dahlia could work pretty well, I think. It's got just one narrator and a pretty straightforward plot once you strip away a couple side narratives.

Confession: while Pierce, Spacey, and Crowe are phenomenal in their roles, I've always been a little bummed that Hanson didn't cast a physically imposing actor as Dudley Smith. Ellroy describes him as this hulking Irishman capable of destroying people with his bare hands, and while Cromwell's a great actor there's

You're not wrong, but saying the original had nothing going for it but Wilder is like saying the late '80s Bulls had nothing going for them but Michael Jordan.

You can't replicate anything about the original Bad News Bears in the current time. Between Matthau's drinking, Jackie Earle Haley's smoking, and every line Tanner says, it's pretty much impossible for a remake to match the tone and be as fun as the original.
