Mark Davis' City of Quartz is a really good introduction to this and other key elements of modern LA history, if anyone wants to know more. The sections on homeowner associations and the history of the LAPD are highlights, but the whole book's worth a read.

I feel like Inside Out is best suited for preteens and up. The major themes (depression, changes in self-identity, sadness as a necessary part of life) are so central to the movie that I wouldn't expect a 6-year old to enjoy it much.

It's a weird interview– the writer comes off as condescending and dismissive and (probably in response to this) Minaj isn't willing to talk about anything outside of her comfort zone.

This comment demonstrates a universal truth that's also the reason why Hatesong sucks: it's infinitely more enjoyable to listen to someone explain why they like something than the other way around.

Ah, 2 liters of sangria+fanta for €2. Good times. In fairness, it's far better than most of the jungle juice mixes you'll see in American colleges, mostly because it's so sugary you'll find yourself wondering how to say 'diabetes' in Spanish.

Oh, it's definitely not a terrible piece of television by any measure, but it's a good step down from the rest of the series. The dislike of it says more about the quality of the other 5 episodes than anything else.

I never saw whatever made people love '15 Million Merits' so much. The two best Black Mirror episodes are clearly 'Entire History of You' and 'White Bear', in that order.

I'm furious how well it worked– that came out of nowhere and just ruined my day. Posting any of the dozens of amazing songs Cam's done would only legitimize an impossibly awful comparison.

The challenges of reconciling truth with the subjects' desires to be depicted positively makes me wonder why anyone would try to make a music biopic. I was thinking about Dreamgirls after watching Straight Outta Compton– anyone trying to make a Supremes biopic would have zero chance of getting the rights to the songs

Agreed on the Internet love. In hindsight, it's crazy how Syd & the Internet received like 1% of the press of Tyler/Earl/Frank trio when they were at their peak a couple years back– Ego Death's the best thing to come out of Odd Future save Channel Orange.

The GTA IV article made me start another playthrough for the first time in a few years. A couple hours in, I appreciate the story they were trying to tell more the second time around but the disconnect between Niko's words and actions still grates. Driving cars actually doesn't annoy me as much as it did back in 2009,

If I know how to do that THE AV CLUB thing, I'd do it here.

I know this is all going to be forgotten the moment the album releases, but it was a little weird that they never announced that the album would be delayed past the original release date. That's not a big deal– it happens all the time. Why not just say so in a press release?

Yeah, that's about as much of an "acquired taste" as an iced latte. In theory it might be a little off-putting, but it's really just a socially acceptable way to get wasted while downing a ton of sugar and cream.

For my money, that's the best line in the best sketch the show ever did.

Ugh. I loathed every one of those movies and had succeeded in blocking out all memories of them being nominated for Best Picture until now. 2011 was a pretty underwhelming year for movies– the two I remember most fondly are probably Lincoln Lawyer and Drive.

Somebody draw a Tomas Kincadesque painting of Lassie and Air Bud welcoming Uggie to the great dog park in the sky so I can frame it and put it in my bedroom.

Joanna Newsom could be giving detailed instructions on how to achieve spiritual transcendence and I'd stay right here on this dirty corporeal plane, because I am not listening to that voice without being tied down Clockwork Orange-style.

Pretty sure that point came when the hardcover version started appearing on shelves next to Mitch Albom novels and the Tao of Pooh.

I appreciate him acknowledging how funny Wallace could be, which is something that I think gets overlooked a lot. This was a nice interview, but I feel really weird about watching The End of the Tour and don't plan on doing so anytime soon.
