In my world, forgiveness requires the other party to acknowledge their wrong doing and make amends. My experience has been that people are extremely slow to do this, if at all.

Speaking for myself- a bitch - I might say I forgave my attacker in court, insincerely, just to shame the fuck out of them. I certainly wouldn’t mean it.

And that’s what I don’t get about forgiveness. Why on earth would you forgive someone who isn’t sorry in the first place? The whole act is one sided for the victim. Why is it the victim’s responsibility to be a bigger person and show kindness? What about the jerk who started it all in the first place?

I am a world class grudge holder because I have to be. I spent many years forgiving and getting treated poorly again and again by the same people. I’m done. It also helps that not a single person that has ever been awful has apologized in any sincere fashion.
