I foolishly dated a Republican for a few months years back, and he asked on multiple occasions how many abortions I had had — and when I told him none, he refused to believe me because, according to him, I was a liberal woman who liked sex, so I must have had a bunch and why was I lying to him? God, he was horrible.

I am 100% with you on this whole thread. It should absolutely be legal but the amount of protection from any criticism that smokers want about their substance of choice is ridiculous. I honestly hope that once weed legal, some of the “cool” factor disappears and we can actually talk logically about it.

My mom says that about alcohol - she drank and we all turned out fine (except for one crib death, and it turns out alcohol in pregnancy is a risk factor for that, not that I’m going to tell my Mom - she still isn’t over my sister’s death). And except for me being unemployable - I have no idea whether alcohol

For the record, I’m a daily cyclist who has probably spent ~$1000 on weed over the past two years. You have an obligation to other road users not to *needlessly* endanger them ostensibly because it’s fun for you. Don’t drive drunk, don’t drive high, don’t ride drunk, don’t ride high. it’s simple.

Yeah, I don’t know a single mother who drank alcohol during pregnancy here in Germany, including my own mother, back in the 70s. Both my sisters didn’t drink, and neither did any of my female friends who have children. In fact, they probably would have been shunned in their “mommy prep groups” if they had!

Can we stop with this bullshit about ‘women in Europe drink alcohol when they are pregnant, it is no biggie’. The recommendation in Germany and the Netherlands is a very clear ‘do not drink alcohol’. A little alcohol may not harm your fetus but we do not know where the cut-off point is and it is unethical to test for

Can you show me where I am policing a woman’s body?

the studies aren’t clear so anecdotal evidence is all we have at this point. i’m just trying to share a perspective as a non-medical professional.

You handled that infantile attack very well. +1 grownup in the room.

No, I think you’re an entitled jerk who places others safety beneath them. Anyone who says their motor functions aren’t impaired while on the weeds is full of shit.

I mean, it sure sounds fun. But I make it a point to not drive drunk, why would I ride high? it’s not like I have some exclusive trail and won’t ever encounter a pedestrian or another cyclist. How could you ever forgive yourself if you hurt someone, and why would you needlessly put them at risk?

I’m not sure that it is. But one does not obviate the others. We should be working to clear our air, ensure our food safety, and take safe medications. It doesn’t mean that we ingest things that may be deleterious simply because everything else is wrong.

Not a prohibitionist: as an adult, smoke away! I do not care. But why take risks with your children’s later health?

when i say i can vouch for it, i mean that the parents of these kids had spoken to doctors about their children’s development and the conclusion was due to substance abuse, specifically THC, during the pregnancy.

sometimes yes sometimes no. sometimes it was due to a dramatic birth story. sometimes it wasn’t due to anything.

Screening is just asking, no blood or urine testing. I get screened for chemical use at every doc and dental appointment. How much and how often do you drink, do drugs? That is a screen.

Even were that true, maybe still don’t smoke?

This doesn’t surprise me. If you lurk long enough on internet pregnancy forums, you’ll see tons of posts of women being like “Smoking weed during pregnancy is okay, right?” and everyone responds being like “Nope! It’s a bad idea!” and then the person gets super defensive, mentions thalidomide and how weed is better

Gee, who could have imagined that all the propaganda about how safe marijuana was would end up endangering people? My hometown rag is penning articles about how awesome it is to ride a bike while high. Seriously, folks, in the age of Trump lets treat our ethical obligations to each other seriously.

Kids whose mothers smoke weed while pregnant have also reportedly shown “impaired functions such as impulse control, visual memory and attention during school years.”
