I always thought that Atticus hated the Ewells way more than he disliked black people. Of course he was racist, but the Ewells were white trash and Mayella was totally slut-shamed. Don't get me wrong, I loved the book. It was problematic as hell, but it's of the time it was written.

The first example to come to mind:

My cat loves all food. He's also a horrible mooch and just generally a butt who refuses to learn good manners. He will climb ALL OVER YOU if you have food, just trying to get at that food. And then he tries to grab the plate. Or will smack your fork as you bring it to your mouth. And if you try to spray him with water

Congrats, you're an abusive parent. Showing your kid not to be violent by being violent? Excellent strategy. That poor baby boy, why do you think he hits, when you show him that hitting is appropriate? And shaking? How old is he? I've seen one too many kids with fucked up vision from being shaken. But I don't think

Not to encourage sexism or anything, but my mum used to be a nurse at an assisted living place, and this experience of renewal (sorry, i know that sounds fucked up) after their husbands died was so common. And it wasn't even particular to the women who were in bad marriages.
With men, the death of their wife would

My grandmother is 103 years old, born in 1911. She was married to my grandfather at the age of 19, they had five children and were happily married until he died 46 years later. She had several suitors after his death but refused to get married again because "they all want me to cook every day and I'm done with

When my grandmother first read The Help, part of her description to me was "And that's the kind of friend I would have been (to black people) too."

I think the line is: she took lovely Japanese women, renamed them: Love, Angel, Music, and Baby and as far as I know, these 4 women never did interviews, sang, or spoke to American media. Now, the girls and Gwen may have had the BEST TIME EVER doing all of this but it just LOOKS bad. It's like.. say Lady Gaga decided

"... and it's that women of color experience street harassment far more (and more severely) than anyone, from men of all races."

If black and Latino men don't want to be featured in a video about catcalling maybe they should just not catcall people.

One day I was sitting on the bus behind a girl with headphones on with a guy started calling her "Blondie," and just generally telling her how he'd like to get to know her. He wasn't particularly crude about it, but it was clear his attention was unwelcome. But he kept trying, and she kept replying in monosyllables

This is what I remember, that there were so many different styles and so many different categories we fell into. My teens and their friends, both male and female, all seem to wear more or less the same stuff. The girls especially; I don't see the same kind of creativity and range in their clothing that we had back

Ugh, I know... he was so gorgeous.

Did anyone else make it to the end? The narrator walking behind the tree and emerging in a new outfit is the best part.

I remember doing it 5x a day in my early 20s. Now, post-menopause, I have little interest. Also, I could use some lady Viagra, since the blood doesn't seem to get down there like it used to; without tumescence it feels a bit pointless. Like most things you dread about aging, it's not as bad as you think it's going
