I think the core philosophy of sites like Jezebel is to point out that these traditions and expectations have no reason to persist in our modern world. I don't even think it's a stretch to say that these traditions and expectations actually DON'T persist for everyone anymore ... Maybe it's just in the circles Stanger

why would it only go one way? if the man had been more successful, would their divorce be blamed on the woman's feelings of inadequacy, strain, and perceived social pressure? should married couples just never work in the same field because no one's mature enough to handle the inevitable fact that one person is going

I hate learning stuff like this about authors I like. I read through that whole blog post, hoping that maybe it was some sort of misunderstanding, but there's really no way to rationalize what she wrote. What???

Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion is great. And I love Lois McMaster Bujold's Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls. (Was not such a fan of her Sharing Knife series.)

I see a female Gyn for the same reasons. It's kinda sad, though, for all the male med students who want to go into OB/Gyn who AREN'T sexual predators showing blatant disregard for the Hippocratic Oath.

Eh, that last one can be useful occasionally. For example, if you have a "friend" who regularly criticizes or denigrates you, gets irrationally angry for trivial reasons, says spiteful things about you to other people, taking advantage of your generosity, etc., etc., it may not be worth maintaining that relationship.

Agreed! What's so cool about having a "career" anyhow? These days, having a high powered career seems to mean giving up your life to serve corporate overlords who wouldn't hesitate a microsec to toss you overboard if they need to meet their earnings target next quarter.

Tracy - I love your posts. Just wanted to let you know. Because I totally have the same problems. (My kid is 13 months.)
