Ooh, wow. As an uppity Black woman I’m insulted that I have yet to be banned. I need to step up my commentary!

I agree. I just don’t want to deter attention from our reveling in a great speech to debate her political qualifications. She has not declared and has made no other recent overtures to suggest she is running. So right now, anybody bringing up reasons she is *not* a good candidate is just hating for the sake of hating.

I see no lies. That’s my whole point. We can’t have two seconds of, ‘hey, that’s cool’ before making sure we all know that she is still somehow less-than she needs them to be to do do an imaginary thing she did not say she was doing. It’s tiresome.

I’m a Black woman, and a speech writer. I would love for the speech to be seen as a stand alone point of excellence that Oprah gave in response to her winning an important award, in the context of a climate harsh on journalists and women speaking our truths. When we ‘hear’ a stump speech, it again positions a Black

I’m seeing many people don’t realize that negotiating her ascension to media darling was a series of political acts. Black women have to curry favor, be nominated, co-signed, elected, do PR, lobby for their own interests and the interests of their people, counsel, build networks, rule and make difficult decisions for

You’re accurate. I know where we are and what time it is. You and I both know the result of the bigger picture. I’m just nosy. I’m sincerely curious about which words they use to reconcile the self-proclaimed label against their entitlement to constant applause.

Do it. And drop some knowledge when you get there!

I took one for the team and did it for you. Let me give you the gist:

I agree. The thing that’s getting me is the conversation shift. We can’t sit in the shine of, ‘that was a great speech’ without an immediate pivot to set her up for something they believe she’s not qualified to do. Why can’t it just be, ‘great speech’ and keep it moving? It’s like seeing an athlete do some phenomenal

Can you help me understand what allyship entails? As a Black woman, I’m really confused about what people believe goes into being an ally. I see so many people declaring themselves to be allies and then everyone acts as if that label exempts them from unpleasant inspection or correction. So Rose says some of the women

Yeah, the word ally is a good way to describe them: say they’re down *on paper* but when help is actually needed there are conditions, excuses, and the situation must benefit them.

That’s an interesting take. Maybe you should address your concern to White women specifically. Considering that White women were/are majorly represented in Oprah’s fandom, and 53% of White women believed a misogynistic, bigoted, celebrity with zero political experience was qualified for the highest office in the land,

Family, bop on over to Jezebel and see how tempered the comments are on Oprah’s speech.

I did! I just got back last night. It was an adventure. You’re going to be mad because I’m about to tell you all about it (as you were a good guide and I don’t know anyone else who can appreciate the Houston-Denver comparison).

Haha. We were excited this Hennessey Pure White bottle made it in the suitcase unharmed and popped it in the elevator before we even got to the room. The cold is indeed racist, and sometimes you can find all the Black Power you need in the duty free shop! I plan to update you on the weekend and you feel free to tell

You have to pay a crazy expensive toll to get to Colorado Springs?

Excellent advice, friend. They’re playing the Sixers tonight-maybe my alternate universe husband Allen Iverson will be there!

I am in Denver, Colorado! (Sorry the pic insists on Sittin’ Sideways in tribute to Houston)

Thanks so much. I heard about a few spots in Aurora, like that one that was on Bar Rescue. Anything specific we should do while we’re in your hometown? I’m on Opentable trying to plan our vittles and all the places are serving quail egg cider-infused veal compote with wasabi kale gratin. I’m just trying to be around

I don’t care about that part. I’m not arguing that it’s *right* for the school to get involved. She and her family deserve the hardest of times and I have no sympathy for them and no problem with them being treated unfairly. I was only correcting that punishment by the school is not really letting the parents off the
