Looking at the newer model’s success, seems like a little KODO styling and MPG are the two ingredients they were missing. Low sales on the -09 may be the reason Mazda aren’t scrambling to put a v6 in their new one.  

987 is great, even the 2.7L version makes for a super fun car. Non-S will slide and dance around the asphalt with you no issues.

With those requirements I would go pre-76 pickup with an modern powerful crate motor.. For the budget you could even get something with really nice interior and suspension. Its a mid life crisis, don’t wimp out and get a late model vehicle. Do it right.
