Diesels are very torquey, relative to similar gas engines. Turbos dramatically improve both.

Why do you care about the cost of gas if you buy a new car, losing thousands in depreciation right off the bat, presumably pay a bunch of interest on a depreciating asset, then presumably trade it in, losing thousands again, and buy another new car, repeating the cycle? Gas cost is a trivial number in that calculation.
