@kookla: Most parents with disabled chidlren would agree that it's a parent's perogative to deal with it privately and use various treatments. I agree that it's unreasonable to expect a hollywood star to be a spokesperson just because they are personally affected by it. But there's also a responsibility as a parent to

@CharlotteT: That's sort of my approach too. This year I took it one step further with sweets (I have a voracious sweet tooth) and am only eating sweets and baked goods I make myself. It's amazing how much less sugary snacks I eat when 1) I have to get my butt in gear to make it and 2) I see two sticks of butter

@the misanthropologist is fermenting: Plus much faster to prepare and less likely to go bad, both big considerations for families where both parents work and fresh food spoil too quickly when neither has time to cook.

@rocknrollunicorn: Glad it helped! Make sure to check out the sale/clearance section - I think the sale stuff sometimes doesn't show up in the regular section when you're browsing.

@LuckyDice: Oh, 100% agreed. I was going to add a comment about systematic echoes of colonialism and imperialism, but I figured the Jezebel community would be right there with me. Glad to see I was right. :-)

@Barkenhoff: It strikes me that what you described sounds unfortunately a lot like what I've heard and read of Aboriginal communities in Australia.

@SevenYearTithe: I just want to add - obvs that feeling of turning against yourself for clothes not fitting would be even more pronounced when almost nobody caters to your size at all. I don't want it to come across as I'm minimizing the problem of finding plus-size clothes that fit.

@SevenYearTithe: Actually, two size 2s can also have very different proportions. My sister and I are examples - stuff that fits well on me is very baggy in the bodice on her; and stuff that fits her makes me look like a quarterback.

ASOS has plus-sizes online (free shipping to US) and at least on fashion blogs it seems women are pretty happy with it.

@LovelyRitaMetermaid: Isn't the average plus-size model a size 10 or 12? Plus they're usually at least 5'9" so that weight is distributed much differently than on the average US woman who is 5'4" or 5'5"

@SilentShout: Any non-straight-sized group gets quarantined. I'm petite and my friend is just barely plus-sized, and we can basically only go shopping for accessories and shoes together. (We both have a lot of shoes.)

@lapsesinlogic: Exactly. Affluent folks do it all the time and it's considered ok because they're simply taking an entitlement that's considered to already be theirs by right.

@lolita7b3: ah, I see you read the small print on the American Dream (tm) Contract.

Also, I'm a little unclear on this but my understanding is that the $30,000 cost the district quoted to her is the cost of the education at the better school. Why didn't they subtract the cost of sending her kids to the worse school? My guess is because it would highlight the grotesque disparity in educational quality.

Also, I think it's BS that they choose to make an example of a poor woman of color on her first offense. In my upper-middle class neighborhood in California, wealthy Korean parents would parachute their kids in from Korea, set up a house for them, and leave them here alone so that they could attend our public school.

@tinyphoto: We should form an organization for prudish leftists.

@drunkexpatwriter: It seems to be fairly egocentric for a woman to say that just because you didn't want to fuck her that you're a cop. I've been part of some young leftist groups in the past and some people were promiscuous, others were not, and it wasn't that big a deal. It's not like this is the Free Love 60s.

@gherkinfiend: I'm not familiar with England's police forces, but the LAPD is also pretty unaccountable (and was actually put under federal supervision twice, I think, for being so corrupt), and if something like this happened here (or any other abuse of power by the LAPD even if it was decried by another authority,

@A Silly Lady Novelist: We won't stop your boss from firing you if you get pregnant, but at least you won't have to use your unemployment check to pay for parking tickets!

@reluctantfeminist: OMG, I never thought of putting the Mulan song on a workout playlist. You are a certifiable GENIUS.
